Nearly all sculptors were paid by the temples to enhance the intricate pillars and archways with renderings of the gods up until the stage came to a close and countless Greeks started to think of their religion as superstitious rather than sacred, when it became more common for sculptors to represent ordinary men and women as well. On one of these terraces lies a stylish bowling green: it's covered in grass and flanked by an old yew hedge that is formed into the shape of rough ramparts.
