Characteristics of Outdoor Statuary in Archaic Greece The first freestanding sculpture was designed by the Archaic Greeks, a recognized success since until then the sole carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Kouros figures, sculptures of adolescent, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks, made up the bulk of the sculptures. The kouroi, regarded by the Greeks to exemplify beauty, had one foot stretched out of a strict forward-facing posture and the male figurines were regularly unclothed, with a strong, sturdy physique. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. A substantial era of transformation for the Greeks, the Archaic period helped bring about more forms of state, expressions of artwork, and a higher comprehension of people and cultures outside of Greece. Similar to many other periods of historical conflict, conflicts were common, and there were struggles between city-states like The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos.
