Gian Bernini's Fountains

Gian Bernini's Fountains There are countless celebrated Roman fountains in its city center. Nearly all of them were designed, architected and built by one of the finest sculptors and artists of the 17th century, Gian Lorenzo Bernini. His expertise as a water feature designer and also as a city designer, are obvious all through the roads of Rome. A celebrated Florentine sculptor, Bernini's father guided his young son, and they eventually moved to Rome to fully express their art, mainly in the form of community water features and water features. An diligent employee, the young Bernini earned praise and patronage of many popes and important artists. At the beginning he was renowned for his sculptural abilities. An authority in historical Greek architecture, he utilized this knowledge as a platform and melded it gracefully with Roman marble, most famously in the Vatican. Though he was influenced by many, Michelangelo had the most profound impact on him, both personally and professionally.

Building a mostra, a grandiose celebratory fountain built by ancient Romans to memorialize the arrival point of an aqueduct, was a tradition revived by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was commissioned by the Pope to build a wall fountain where we now see the Trevi Fountain. The Trevi Fountain as well as the renowned baroque fountains found in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona were eventually supplied with water from the modified aqueduct he had rebuilt.
