Water Transport Solutions in Historic Rome Aqua Anio Vetus, the first raised aqueduct founded in Rome, started supplying the many people living in the hills with water in 273 BC, although they had counted on natural springs up till then.
Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the only techniques available at the time to supply water to areas of higher elevation. Starting in the sixteenth century, a unique program was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean sections to provide water to Pincian Hill. Throughout the length of the aqueduct’s channel were pozzi, or manholes, that gave access. Since indoor plumbing became the norm of the day for fresh, drinking water, by the end of the 19th century urban fountains were no longer needed for this purpose and they became purely ornamental. Fountains using mechanical pumps instead of gravity allowed fountains to deliver recycled water into living spaces as well as create special water effects.
