Previous to 273, when the first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was constructed in Rome, citizens who resided on hills had to travel further down to collect their water from natural sources. Over this period, there were only two other technologies capable of providing water to higher areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which gathered rainwater. From the beginning of the sixteenth century, water was routed to Pincian Hill via the subterranean channel of Acqua Vergine. Pozzi, or manholes, were built at regular intervals along the aqueduct’s channel. Even though they were primarily planned to make it possible to service the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi began using the manholes to get water from the channel, commencing when he purchased the property in 1543. The cistern he had built to gather rainwater wasn’t sufficient to meet his water specifications. That is when he made a decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran beneath his residential property.
