The advent of the Normans in the second half of the 11th century substantially transformed The Anglo-Saxon ways of living. The talent of the Normans surpassed the Anglo-Saxons' in architecture and farming at the time of the conquest. But before centering on home-life or having the occasion to consider domestic architecture or decoration, the Normans had to subjugate an entire population. Monasteries and castles served different purposes, so while monasteries were large stone structures assembled in only the most productive, wide dales, castles were set upon blustery knolls where the people focused on learning offensive and defensive practices. Relaxing activities such as gardening were out of place in these desolate citadels. The early Anglo-Norman style of architecture is symbolized in Berkeley Castle, which is most likely the most untouched illustration we have. The keep is thought to date from the time of William the Conqueror. A massive terrace serves as a deterrent to invaders who would try to mine the walls of the building. A picturesque bowling green, enveloped in grass and enclosed by battlements cut out of an ancient yew hedge, forms one of the terraces.

The Defining Characteristics of Ancient Greek Statuary Archaic Greeks were renowned for creating the first freestanding statuary; up until then, most carvings were constructed out of walls and pillars as reliefs. Kouros figures, statues of young, handsome male or female (kore) Greeks, made up the greater part of the statues. Thought of by Greeks to characterize beauty, the kouroi were created into stiff, forward facing positions with one foot outstretched, and the male statues were usually nude, muscular, and fit. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. The Archaic period was an incredible point of change for the Greeks as they grew into new forms of government, formed unique expressions of art, and attained insights of the people and cultures outside of Greece. Still, these battles did little to impede the progress of the Greek civilization.
