Early Water Supply Techniques in Rome

Early Water Supply Techniques in Rome Rome’s very first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; prior to that, citizens residing at higher elevations had to rely on natural springs for their water. During this time period, there were only two other technologies capable of supplying water to elevated areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which amassed rainwater. To deliver water to Pincian Hill in the early sixteenth century, they employed the brand-new tactic of redirecting the flow from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct’s underground channel. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. Though they were primarily manufactured to make it possible to service the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi started using the manholes to get water from the channel, starting when he purchased the property in 1543. He didn’t get sufficient water from the cistern that he had built on his property to gather rainwater. Via an orifice to the aqueduct that ran under his property, he was in a position to reach his water desires.
