Characteristics of Garden Statues in Archaic Greece The first freestanding statuary was designed by the Archaic Greeks, a distinguished success since until then the only carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and pillars.
Most of these freestanding sculptures were what is known as kouros figures, statues of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks. The kouroi were believed by the Greeks to typify beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising rigidity to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, brawny, and nude. Around 650 BC, life-size models of the kouroi began to be seen. The Archaic period was turbulent for the Greeks as they evolved into more polished forms of federal government and art, and acquired more information about the peoples and societies outside of Greece. And yet these disagreements did not prevent the emergence of the Greek civilization. {
