The Source of Modern Day Outdoor Fountains
The Source of Modern Day Outdoor Fountains Hundreds of classic Greek documents were translated into Latin under the auspices of the scholarly Pope Nicholas V, who led the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455. He undertook the beautification of Rome to make it into the worthy seat of the Christian world. In 1453 the Pope commissioned the repairing of the Aqua Vergine, an ancient Roman aqueduct which had carried fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away. A mostra, a monumental commemorative fountain constructed by ancient Romans to mark the point of arrival of an aqueduct, was a practice which was restored by Nicholas V. At the behest of the Pope, architect Leon Battista Alberti began the construction of a wall fountain in the spot where we now find the Trevi Fountain. The water which eventually furnished the Trevi Fountain as well as the acclaimed baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona flowed from the modified aqueduct which he had renovated.

The Original Outdoor Water Feature Designers
Frequently serving as architects, sculptors, artists, engineers and cultivated scholars, all in one, fountain creators were multi-faceted people from the 16th to the late 18th century. Throughout the Renaissance, Leonardo da Vinci exemplified the creator as an innovative wizard, creator and scientific specialist. The forces of nature inspired him to explore the properties and motion of water, and due to his curiosity, he methodically captured his experiences in his now renowned notebooks. Brilliant water exhibits complete with symbolic meaning and all-natural beauty converted private villa settings when early Italian water fountain designers fused creativity with hydraulic and landscaping expertise. The humanist Pirro Ligorio supplied the vision behind the wonders in Tivoli and was recognized for his virtuosity in archeology, architecture and garden concepts. Other water feature designers, masterminding the fantastic water marbles, water functions and water jokes for the countless estates in the vicinity of Florence, were tried and tested in humanistic topics and classical scientific readings.
