Anglo-Saxon Grounds at the Time of the Norman Conquest
Anglo-Saxon Grounds at the Time of the Norman Conquest The Anglo-Saxon way of life was drastically changed by the introduction of the Normans in the later eleventh century. Engineering and horticulture were skills that the Normans excelled in, trumping that of the Anglo-Saxons at the time of the occupation.
But yet there was no time for home life, domesticated design, and adornment until the Normans had overcome the whole region. Monasteries and castles served separate functions, so while monasteries were massive stone structures assembled in only the most fruitful, wide dales, castles were set upon blustery knolls where the people focused on understanding offensive and defensive techniques. The calm method of gardening was unlikely in these dreary bastions. The best specimen of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture existent in modern times is Berkeley Castle. The keep is said to date from William the Conqueror's time period. A monumental terrace serves as a discouraging factor to intruders who would try to mine the walls of the building. A scenic bowling green, enveloped in grass and bordered by battlements clipped out of an ancient yew hedge, creates one of the terraces.

The Hellenic Republic: Cultural Statuary
Although many sculptors were remunerated by the temples to adorn the sophisticated columns and archways with renderings of the gods of old, as the time period came to a close, it became more prevalent for sculptors to represent average people as well because many of Greeks had begun to think of their religion as superstitious rather than sacred. Portraiture, which would be accepted by the Romans upon their annexation of Greek civilization became conventional as well, and thriving family members would at times commission a portrait of their forebears to be placed in enormous familial tombs. A time of aesthetic progression, the use of sculpture and alternate art forms morphed during the Greek Classical period, so it is inexact to assume that the arts served only one function. Whether to fulfill a visual yearning or to celebrate the figures of religion, Greek sculpture was actually an innovative approach in the ancient world, which may be what draws our attention currently.
