The History of Outdoor Water Fountains

The History of Outdoor Water Fountains Hundreds of classic Greek texts were translated into Latin under the authority of the scholarly Pope Nicholas V, who ruled the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455. He undertook the beautification of Rome to turn it into the worthy seat of the Christian world. Starting in 1453, the ruined ancient Roman aqueduct known as the Aqua Vergine which had brought fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away, underwent repair at the behest of the Pope. The ancient Roman custom of building an awe-inspiring commemorative fountain at the point where an aqueduct arrived, also known as a mostra, was resurrected by Nicholas V. The Trevi Fountain now occupies the space previously filled with a wall fountain built by Leon Battista Albert, an architect employed by the Pope. Changes and extensions, included in the restored aqueduct, eventually provided the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.

Anglo Saxon Grounds at the Time of the Norman Conquest

Anglo Saxon Grounds at the Time of the Norman Conquest Anglo-Saxons experienced incredible modifications to their daily lives in the latter half of the eleventh century due to the accession of the Normans. At the time of the conquest, the Normans surpassed the Anglo-Saxons in building design and cultivation. But the Normans had to pacify the whole territory before they could focus on home life, domestic architecture, and decoration.Anglo Saxon Grounds Time Norman Conquest 628239445269206200.jpg Because of this, castles were cruder structures than monasteries: Monasteries were often significant stone buildings located in the biggest and most fertile valleys, while castles were constructed on windy crests where their inhabitants dedicated time and space to projects for offense and defense. Gardening, a placid occupation, was impracticable in these unproductive fortifications. Berkeley Castle is perhaps the most unchanged model in existence nowadays of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture. The keep is rumored to have been invented during the time of William the Conqueror. An enormous terrace encompasses the building, serving as an obstacle to assailants trying to dig under the castle walls. A scenic bowling green, enveloped in grass and enclosed by battlements cut out of an ancient yew hedge, creates one of the terraces.
