When and Where Did Water Features Originate? Hundreds of ancient Greek records were translated into Latin under the authority of the scholarly Pope Nicholas V, who led the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455. Experts suggest that the typical garden fountain undergoes a thorough scrubbing every 3-4 months. The initial step is to get rid of all the water. Then use a soft cloth and mild cleanser to scrub the inside. If there is detailed artwork, you might need to use a toothbrush for those hard-to-reach areas. Any soap residue left on your fountain can damage it, so be sure it is all rinsed off.
Various organisms and calcium deposits may get inside the pump, so it is recommended to take it apart and clean it thoroughly. Soaking it in vinegar for a bit will make it easier to scrub. If you want to remove build-up in your fountain, use rain water or mineral water rather than tap water, as these don’t contain any elements that might stick to the inside of the pump.
Lastly, make sure your fountain is always full by looking at it every day - this will keep it in tip-top shape. If the water level falls below the pump’s intake level, it can damage the pump and cause it to burn out - something you don't want to happen!
