Bernini's Early Showpieces Bernini's earliest water fountain, named Barcaccia, is a breath taking work of art seen at the bottom of the Trinita dei Monti in Piaza di Spagna. In about 1630, the great master designed the first water fountain of his career at the behest of Pope Ubano VIII. People can now see the fountain as an illustration of a great ship gradually sinking into the Mediterranean. According to 16th century reports, a great flood of the Tevere covered the entire area in water, an event which was memorialized by the eye-catching fountain. In what turned out to be his one and only extended absence from Italy, Bernini {journeyed | traveled] to France in 1665.
