The Hellenic Republic: Architectural Sculpture

The Hellenic Republic: Architectural Sculpture A good number of sculptors were remunerated by the temples to adorn the intricate pillars and archways with renderings of the gods until the stage came to a close and countless Greeks began to think of their religion as superstitious rather than sacred, when it became more common for sculptors to portray everyday men and women as well.Hellenic Republic: Architectural Sculpture 0942012871.jpg In some cases, a depiction of affluent families' forefathers would be commissioned to be laid inside of huge familial burial tombs, and portraiture, which would be copied by the Romans upon their conquest of Greek civilization, also became customary. A point of aesthetic progression, the use of sculpture and other art forms transformed during the Greek Classical period, so it is not entirely accurate to suggest that the arts provided only one function. Whether to fulfill a visual yearning or to celebrate the figures of religion, Greek sculpture was actually an imaginative practice in the ancient world, which may well be what draws our interest today.

The Source of Modern Wall Fountains

The Source of Modern Wall Fountains Pope Nicholas V, himself a well educated man, reigned the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455 during which time he commissioned many translations of ancient classical Greek texts into Latin. Embellishing Rome and making it the worthy capital of the Christian world was at the core of his objectives. In 1453 the Pope instigated the rebuilding of the Aqua Vergine, an historic Roman aqueduct which had carried fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away. Building a mostra, an imposing celebratory fountain built by ancient Romans to memorialize the entry point of an aqueduct, was a custom revived by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was commissioned by the Pope to build a wall fountain where we now find the Trevi Fountain.Source Modern Wall Fountains 94887497.jpg The aqueduct he had reconditioned included modifications and extensions which eventually allowed it to supply water to the Trevi Fountain as well as the famed baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona.
