"Primitive" Greek Artistry: Outdoor Statuary
"Primitive" Greek Artistry: Outdoor Statuary The primitive Greeks manufactured the first freestanding statuary, an amazing achievement as most sculptures up until then had been reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Youthful, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks were the subject matter of most of the sculptures, or kouros figures.
Considered by Greeks to characterize skin care, the kouroi were formed into inflexible, forward facing poses with one foot outstretched, and the male statues were usually nude, well-built, and fit. In about 650 BC, the variations of the kouroi became life-sized. Throughout the Archaic time, a big time of changes, the Greeks were evolving new forms of government, expressions of art, and a greater comprehension of people and cultures outside Greece. The Arcadian conflicts, the Spartan penetration of Samos, and other wars between city-states are good examples of the kinds of clashes that occurred frequently, which is consistent with other times of historical change.

When and Where Did Water Fountains Emerge?
Pope Nicholas V, himself a well educated man, reigned the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455 during which time he commissioned many translations of ancient classical Greek texts into Latin. In order to make Rome deserving of being the capital of the Christian world, the Pope resolved to embellish the beauty of the city. Beginning in 1453, the ruined ancient Roman aqueduct known as the Aqua Vergine which had brought clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away, underwent repair at the bidding of the Pope. The ancient Roman custom of building an imposing commemorative fountain at the point where an aqueduct arrived, also known as a mostra, was restored by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was directed by the Pope to put up a wall fountain where we now find the Trevi Fountain. The water which eventually furnished the Trevi Fountain as well as the famed baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona came from the modified aqueduct which he had renovated.
