Original Water Supply Solutions in Rome
Original Water Supply Solutions in Rome Prior to 273, when the first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was constructed in Rome, inhabitants who dwelled on hills had to travel even further down to gather their water from natural sources. Over this time period, there were only 2 other systems capable of delivering water to higher areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which accumulated rainwater. To supply water to Pincian Hill in the early 16th century, they employed the brand-new approach of redirecting the stream from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct’s underground network. Pozzi, or manholes, were made at regular stretches along the aqueduct’s channel.
