The First Contemporary Outdoor Wall Fountains
The First Contemporary Outdoor Wall Fountains The translation of hundreds of ancient Greek documents into Latin was commissioned by the scholarly Pope Nicholas V who ruled the Church in Rome from 1397 until 1455. Embellishing Rome and making it the worthy capital of the Christian world was at the heart of his ambitions.
In 1453 the Pope commissioned the reconstruction of the Aqua Vergine, an historic Roman aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away. The ancient Roman custom of building an awe-inspiring commemorative fountain at the point where an aqueduct arrived, also known as a mostra, was restored by Nicholas V. The present-day location of the Trevi Fountain was formerly occupied by a wall fountain commissioned by the Pope and constructed by the architect Leon Battista Alberti. The water which eventually provided the Trevi Fountain as well as the renown baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona flowed from the modified aqueduct which he had renovated.
The Effect of the Norman Invasion on Anglo-Saxon Garden Design
The Effect of the Norman Invasion on Anglo-Saxon Garden Design The arrival of the Normans in the second half of the eleventh century irreparably transformed The Anglo-Saxon lifestyle. The Normans were much better than the Anglo-Saxons at architecture and horticulture when they came into power. But before centering on home-life or having the occasion to consider domestic architecture or decoration, the Normans had to subjugate an entire society.
Most often constructed upon windy peaks, castles were basic structures that enabled their occupants to devote time and space to offensive and defensive strategies, while monasteries were rambling stone buildings frequently added in only the most fecund, broad valleys. Gardening, a quiet occupation, was impracticable in these unproductive fortifications. The early Anglo-Norman style of architecture is depicted in Berkeley Castle, which is conceivably the most unscathed illustration we have. The keep is reported to have been developed during the time of William the Conqueror. A significant terrace serves as a deterrent to intruders who would try to mine the walls of the building. One of these terraces, a charming bowling green, is covered grass and flanked by an ancient yew hedge cut into the shape of crude battlements.
Greece: Cultural Statuary
Greece: Cultural Statuary Nearly all sculptors were remunerated by the temples to adorn the elaborate pillars and archways with renderings of the gods up until the stage came to a close and many Greeks started to think of their religion as superstitious rather than sacred, when it became more typical for sculptors to represent ordinary people as well. Often times, a representation of wealthy families' ancestors would be commissioned to be placed within huge familial tombs, and portraiture, which would be replicated by the Romans upon their conquering of Greek civilization, also became commonplace. During the the years of The Greek Classical period, a time of artistic development, the use of sculpture and many other art forms changed, so it is incorrect to say that the arts delivered merely one purpose. It may be the advanced quality of Greek sculpture that captivates our awareness these days; it was on a leading-edge practice of the classic world whether it was created for religious purposes or artistic pleasure.
