A Chronicle of Fountains
A Chronicle of Fountains
Pope Nicholas V, himself a learned man, governed the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455 during which time he commissioned many translations of ancient classical Greek texts into Latin. He undertook the embellishment of Rome to turn it into the worthy capital of the Christian world. Restoration of the Acqua Vergine, a ruined Roman aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away, began in 1453 at the behest of the Pope. The ancient Roman custom of marking the arrival point of an aqueduct with an magnificent celebratory fountain, also known as a mostra, was restored by Nicholas V. At the behest of the Pope, architect Leon Battista Alberti began the construction of a wall fountain in the spot where we now find the Trevi Fountain. The Trevi Fountain as well as the well-known baroque fountains found in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona were eventually supplied with water from the altered aqueduct he had reconstructed.
Water Fountains Lost to History
Water Fountains Lost to History Water fountains were initially practical in purpose, used to bring water from rivers or springs to towns and hamlets, providing the residents with clean water to drink, bathe, and prepare food with. A source of water higher in elevation than the fountain was required to pressurize the movement and send water squirting from the fountain's spout, a system without equal until the later part of the 19th century. The beauty and spectacle of fountains make them appropriate for historical monuments. Rough in design, the very first water fountains didn't appear much like modern fountains. A natural stone basin, carved from rock, was the first fountain, used for holding water for drinking and ceremonial purposes. Stone basins are theorized to have been first used around 2000 BC. The spraying of water emerging from small spouts was forced by gravity, the lone power source creators had in those days. Drinking water was supplied by public fountains, long before fountains became elaborate public monuments, as beautiful as they are functional. Fountains with decorative Gods, mythological beasts, and animals began to appear in Rome in about 6 B.C., crafted from rock and bronze. The extraordinary aqueducts of Rome supplied water to the eye-catching public fountains, many of which you can go see today.
