Every three-four months, garden fountains should go through a decent cleaning. To start with you must remove the water. Then use a soft rag and gentle cleanser to scrub the inside. Feel free to use a toothbrush if needed for any smaller crevasses. Be sure to completely rinse the inner surface of the fountain to make sure all the soap is gone.
It is highly suggested taking the pump apart to better clean the inside and eliminate any plankton or calcium. Letting it soak in vinegar for a couple of hours first will make it much easier to clean. If you want to remove build-up in your fountain, use rain water or mineral water rather than tap water, as these don’t contain any ingredients that will stick to the inside of the pump.
And finally, make sure the water level is continuously full in order to keep your fountain running smoothly. Allowing the water level to get too low can cause damage to the pump - and you certainly do not want that!
