Aqueducts: The Solution to Rome's Water Challenges
Aqueducts: The Solution to Rome's Water Challenges Rome’s very first raised aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; prior to that, citizens living at higher elevations had to depend on local streams for their water.
If inhabitants living at higher elevations did not have access to springs or the aqueduct, they’d have to be dependent on the other existing systems of the time, cisterns that collected rainwater from the sky and subterranean wells that received the water from under ground. To deliver water to Pincian Hill in the early sixteenth century, they applied the brand-new approach of redirecting the flow from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct’s underground channel. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. Whilst these manholes were developed to make it simpler and easier to protect the aqueduct, it was also possible to use buckets to remove water from the channel, which was done by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he obtained the property in 1543 to his death in 1552. Whilst the cardinal also had a cistern to get rainwater, it didn’t produce enough water. That is when he made the decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran under his residential property.
