Attributes of Garden Statuary in Archaic Greece
Attributes of Garden Statuary in Archaic Greece Archaic Greeks were renowned for creating the first freestanding statuary; up till then, most carvings were made out of walls and pillars as reliefs. Youthful, appealing male or female (kore) Greeks were the subject matter of most of the sculptures, or kouros figures. The kouroi were seen by the Greeks to represent beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising rigidity to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, brawny, and undressing. In around 650 BC, the differences of the kouroi became life-sized. The Archaic period was turbulent for the Greeks as they evolved into more refined forms of federal government and art, and acquired more information and facts about the peoples and civilizations outside of Greece. But these disagreements did not prevent the expansion of the Greek civilization. {

The Source of Modern Day Garden Fountains
The Source of Modern Day Garden Fountains
Hundreds of ancient Greek texts were translated into Latin under the auspices of the scholarly Pope Nicholas V, who ruled the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455. It was imperative for him to beautify the city of Rome to make it worthy of being called the capital of the Christian world. In 1453 the Pope commissioned the rebuilding of the Aqua Vergine, an historic Roman aqueduct which had carried fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away. A mostra, a monumental dedicatory fountain constructed by ancient Romans to mark the point of entry of an aqueduct, was a practice which was revived by Nicholas V. The Trevi Fountain now occupies the area formerly filled with a wall fountain built by Leon Battista Albert, an architect employed by the Pope. Adjustments and extensions, included in the repaired aqueduct, eventually supplied the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.
The Effect of the Norman Conquest on Anglo-Saxon Gardens
The Effect of the Norman Conquest on Anglo-Saxon Gardens
Anglo-Saxons experienced great changes to their day-to-day lives in the latter half of the eleventh century due to the accession of the Normans. At the time of the conquest, the Normans surpassed the Anglo-Saxons in building design and cultivation. But the Normans had to pacify the entire territory before they could focus on home life, domestic architecture, and decoration. Most often designed upon windy summits, castles were fundamental constructs that enabled their inhabitants to devote time and space to offensive and defensive strategies, while monasteries were rambling stone buildings commonly placed in only the most fecund, broad valleys. Gardening, a placid occupation, was unfeasible in these unproductive fortifications. The early Anglo-Norman style of architecture is exemplified in Berkeley Castle, which is perhaps the most unscathed sample we have. The keep is said to date from the time of William the Conqueror. An enormous terrace encompasses the building, serving as an obstruction to attackers trying to excavate under the castle walls. On one of these terraces sits a charming bowling green: it's coated in grass and flanked by an old yew hedge that is created into the shape of rough ramparts.
