The Source of Today's Outdoor Fountains
Pope Nicholas V, himself a learned man, reigned the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455 during which time he commissioned many translations of old classical Greek texts into Latin. It was imperative for him to beautify the city of Rome to make it worthy of being known as the capital of the Christian world. In 1453 the Pope commissioned the reconstruction of the Aqua Vergine, an historic Roman aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into the city from eight miles away. The ancient Roman custom of building an imposing commemorative fountain at the point where an aqueduct arrived, also known as a mostra, was resurrected by Nicholas V. The Trevi Fountain now occupies the space previously filled with a wall fountain built by Leon Battista Albert, an architect employed by the Pope. The aqueduct he had refurbished included modifications and extensions which eventually enabled it to supply water to the Trevi Fountain as well as the renowned baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona.
Classic Greece: The Origins of Outdoor Statue Design
Classic Greece: The Origins of Outdoor Statue Design Most sculptors were remunerated by the temples to adorn the elaborate pillars and archways with renderings of the gods until the time period came to a close and countless Greeks began to think of their religion as superstitious rather than sacred, when it became more common for sculptors to portray ordinary people as well. Portraiture came to be widespread as well, and would be welcomed by the Romans when they defeated the Greeks, and quite often affluent households would order a representation of their progenitors to be positioned inside their grand familial tombs. A time of artistic enhancement, the use of sculpture and alternate art forms morphed throughout the Greek Classical period, so it is inaccurate to suggest that the arts provided only one function. Greek sculpture is probably appealing to us all today as it was an avant-garde experiment in the ancient world, so it does not matter whether its original purpose was religious zeal or artistic pleasure.
