Rome’s Early Water Delivery Systems Prior to 273, when the first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was established in Rome, residents who dwelled on hillsides had to go further down to get their water from natural sources. If citizens residing at higher elevations did not have access to springs or the aqueduct, they’d have to count on the remaining existing systems of the time, cisterns that compiled rainwater from the sky and subterranean wells that received the water from below ground.
To provide water to Pincian Hill in the early sixteenth century, they employed the emerging method of redirecting the flow from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct’s underground network. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. While these manholes were created to make it much easier to maintain the aqueduct, it was also feasible to use containers to extract water from the channel, which was practiced by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he purchased the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552. Even though the cardinal also had a cistern to get rainwater, it didn’t supply a sufficient amount of water. To provide himself with a more efficient way to gather water, he had one of the manholes opened, giving him access to the aqueduct below his property.
