A Chronicle of Wall Fountains

A Chronicle of Wall Fountains Pope Nicholas V, himself a learned man, governed the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455 during which time he commissioned many translations of old classical Greek documents into Latin. It was important for him to beautify the city of Rome to make it worthy of being known as the capital of the Christian world.Chronicle Wall Fountains 9909493440607407027.jpg At the bidding of the Pope, the Aqua Vergine, a ruined aqueduct which had transported clean drinking water into Rome from eight miles away, was renovated starting in 1453. The ancient Roman custom of building an imposing commemorative fountain at the location where an aqueduct arrived, also known as a mostra, was revived by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was commissioned by the Pope to build a wall fountain where we now see the Trevi Fountain. The aqueduct he had refurbished included modifications and extensions which eventually allowed it to supply water to the Trevi Fountain as well as the famed baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona.

The Earliest Recorded Outdoor Public Fountains of Human History

Striking and impressive, prominent water fountains have been built as memorials in nearly all cultures. Rough in design, the 1st water fountains did not appear much like present fountains. Basic stone basins crafted from local stone were the very first fountains, used for spiritual ceremonies and drinking water. Stone basins as fountains have been discovered from 2,000 BC. The very first civilizations that made use of fountains depended on gravity to drive water through spigots. Positioned near reservoirs or springs, the practical public water fountains furnished the local population with fresh drinking water. The Romans began constructing elaborate fountains in 6 B.C., most of which were metallic or natural stone masks of wildlife and mythological representations. The extraordinary aqueducts of Rome supplied water to the spectacular public fountains, most of which you can go see today.
