Anglo-Saxon Grounds at the Time of the Norman Conquest

Anglo-Saxon Grounds at the Time of the Norman Conquest Anglo-Saxons felt great modifications to their daily lives in the latter half of the eleventh century due to the accession of the Normans.Anglo-Saxon Grounds Time Norman Conquest 73869421827.jpg The Normans were much better than the Anglo-Saxons at architecture and horticulture when they came into power. But the Normans had to pacify the whole territory before they could focus on home life, domestic architecture, and decoration. Castles were more basic constructions and often erected on blustery hills, where their people devoted both time and space to practicing offense and defense, while monasteries were major stone buildings, commonly situated in the widest, most fruitful hollows. Relaxing activities such as gardening were out of place in these desolate citadels. The early Anglo-Norman style of architecture is exemplified in Berkeley Castle, which is most likely the most untouched sample we have. The keep is said to date from William the Conqueror's time period. As a technique of deterring attackers from tunneling under the walls, an immense terrace encompasses the building. On one of these terraces lies a quaint bowling green: it is coated in grass and flanked by an old yew hedge that is formed into the shape of rough ramparts.
