Archaic Greek Artwork: Outdoor Statuary The first freestanding sculpture was developed by the Archaic Greeks, a distinguished success since until then the sole carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and columns. Most of these freestanding sculptures were what is known as kouros figures, statues of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks.
Representing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were designed to appear stiff and commonly had foot in front; the males were vigorous, powerful, and nude. The kouroi became life-sized starting in 650 BC. A massive period of improvement for the Greeks, the Archaic period introduced about new forms of state, expressions of artwork, and a higher appreciation of people and customs outside of Greece. The Arcadian wars, the Spartan penetration of Samos, and other wars between city-states are examples of the kinds of clashes that arose frequently, which is consistent with other times of historical change.

Hundreds of ancient Greek texts were translated into Latin under the authority of the scholarly Pope Nicholas V, who led the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455. He undertook the beautification of Rome to make it into the worthy capital of the Christian world. At the behest of the Pope, the Aqua Vergine, a ruined aqueduct which had transported clean drinking water into Rome from eight miles away, was reconditioned starting in 1453. The Trevi Fountain now occupies the space previously filled with a wall fountain built by Leon Battista Albert, an architect commissioned by the Pope. The water which eventually furnished the Trevi Fountain as well as the famed baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona flowed from the modified aqueduct which he had renovated.
