A Short History of the Early Public Water Fountains
A Short History of the Early Public Water Fountains As initially developed, water fountains were designed to be functional, guiding water from streams or aqueducts to the residents of cities and villages, where the water could be used for cooking food, washing, and drinking. To produce water flow through a fountain until the later part of the 1800’s, and produce a jet of water, required the force of gravity and a water source such as a creek or reservoir, located higher than the fountain. Commonly used as memorials and commemorative structures, water fountains have inspired men and women from all over the world throughout the centuries. The common fountains of today bear little likeness to the very first water fountains. Uncomplicated stone basins crafted from local material were the very first fountains, used for religious functions and drinking water. 2,000 B.C. is when the oldest identified stone fountain basins were actually used. The spray of water emerging from small jets was pressured by gravity, the only power source creators had in those days. Drinking water was provided by public fountains, long before fountains became elaborate public statues, as pretty as they are functional. The Romans began creating decorative fountains in 6 B.C., most of which were metallic or stone masks of wildlife and mythological representations. The impressive aqueducts of Rome supplied water to the incredible public fountains, most of which you can go see today.Landscape Fountains As Water Elements
