Bernini's Garden Fountains There are numerous celebrated water fountains in the city center of Rome.
One of the best ever sculptors and artists of the 17th century, nearly all of them were designed, conceptualized and constructed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. His abilities as a water feature designer and also as a city designer, are evident throughout the streets of Rome. Bernini's father, a recognized Florentine sculptor, guided his young son, and they ultimately settled in Rome, to fully express their art in the form of public water fountains and water fountains. The young Bernini received encouragement from Popes and relevant artists alike, and was an exceptional worker. Originally he was celebrated for his sculpting skills. An authority in ancient Greek engineering, he used this knowledge as a starting point and melded it flawlessly with Roman marble, most remarkably in the Vatican. He was influenced by many a great artists, however, Michelangelo had the biggest impact on his work.

Bernini’s First Italian Water Fountains Bernini's earliest fountain, named Barcaccia, is a masterful work of art seen at the bottom of the Trinita dei Monti in Piaza di Spagna. To this day, this area is filled with Roman locals and travelers alike who enjoy conversation and each other's company. Today, the city streets surrounding Bernini's fountain are a trendy area where people go to gather, something which the artist would have been pleased to learn. Dating back to around 1630, Pope Urbano VIII commissioned what was to be the earliest water fountain of the master's career. An enormous vessel slowly sinking into the Mediterranean is the fountain's central theme. Period writings dating back to the 16th century indicate that the fountain was built as a monument to those who lost their lives in the great flooding of the Tevere.
Absenting himself from Italy only once in his life for a long-lasting period of time, in 1665 Bernini voyaged to France.
