Anglo-Saxons experienced great adjustments to their day-to-day lives in the latter half of the eleventh century due to the accession of the Normans. At the time of the conquest, the Normans surpassed the Anglo-Saxons in building design and cultivation. On one of these parapets is a scenic bowling green covered in grass and bordered by an aged hedge of yew that has been shaped into coarse battlements.

Water fountains were at first practical in purpose, used to deliver water from rivers or springs to towns and villages, supplying the residents with clean water to drink, bathe, and cook with. To produce water flow through a fountain until the late 1800’s, and generate a jet of water, mandated gravity and a water source such as a creek or lake, situated higher than the fountain. The appeal and spectacle of fountains make them appropriate for traditional memorials. Crude in style, the first water fountains didn't look much like modern-day fountains. Uncomplicated stone basins sculpted from nearby material were the original fountains, used for religious ceremonies and drinking water. The earliest stone basins are believed to be from about 2000 B.C.. The force of gravity was the power source that operated the earliest water fountains. These original fountains were created to be functional, frequently situated along reservoirs, streams and rivers to supply drinking water. Fountains with embellished Gods, mythological beasts, and creatures began to appear in Rome in about 6 BC, crafted from rock and bronze. A well-designed collection of reservoirs and aqueducts kept Rome's public fountains supplied with fresh water.
