The Original Outdoor Public Fountains of Human History

The Original Outdoor Public Fountains of Human History The water from rivers and other sources was originally provided to the residents of nearby towns and cities by way of water fountains, whose purpose was primarily practical, not aesthetic. A supply of water higher in elevation than the fountain was needed to pressurize the movement and send water squirting from the fountain's nozzle, a technology without equal until the later part of the 19th century. The elegance and wonder of fountains make them perfect for historic memorials. When you encounter a fountain at present, that is not what the first water fountains looked like. The first recognized water fountain was a natural stone basin created that served as a container for drinking water and ceremonial functions. Rock basins are believed to have been 1st utilized around 2000 BC.Original Outdoor Public Fountains Human History 1683905668.jpg The earliest civilizations that used fountains relied on gravity to force water through spigots. Positioned near aqueducts or creeks, the functional public water fountains furnished the local population with fresh drinking water. Fountains with flowery decoration started to show up in Rome in approximately 6 BC, commonly gods and creatures, made with stone or copper-base alloy. A well-designed collection of reservoirs and aqueducts kept Rome's public water fountains supplied with fresh water.

From Where Did Water Features Emerge?

Pope Nicholas V, himself a learned man, ruled the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455 during which time he commissioned many translations of ancient classic Greek texts into Latin. He undertook the embellishment of Rome to make it into the worthy capital of the Christian world. At the behest of the Pope, the Aqua Vergine, a damaged aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into Rome from eight miles away, was renovated starting in 1453. Building a mostra, a grandiose celebratory fountain built by ancient Romans to memorialize the arrival point of an aqueduct, was a custom revived by Nicholas V. The present-day site of the Trevi Fountain was formerly occupied by a wall fountain commissioned by the Pope and built by the architect Leon Battista Alberti. The Trevi Fountain as well as the renowned baroque fountains located in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona were eventually supplied with water from the modified aqueduct he had rebuilt.
