Characteristics of Garden Statues in Archaic Greece The initial freestanding sculpture was improved by the Archaic Greeks, a recognized achievement since until then the only carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Most of these freestanding sculptures were what is known as kouros figures, statues of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks. Symbolizing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were created to appear stiff and typically had foot in front; the males were vigorous, robust, and nude. The kouroi became life-sized starting in 650 BC. Throughout the Archaic period, a great time of changes, the Greeks were developing new types of government, expressions of art, and a larger awareness of people and cultures outside Greece. Throughout this time and other times of historic tumultuousness, encounters often occurred, most notably wars fought amongst city-states such as the Arcadian wars and the Spartan infiltration of Samos.
