Acqua Vergine: The Remedy to Rome's Water Challenges
With the manufacturing of the first raised aqueduct in Rome, the Aqua Anio Vetus in 273 BC, folks who lived on the city’s hillsides no longer had to be dependent strictly on naturally-occurring spring water for their needs. Over this time period, there were only two other innovations capable of offering water to elevated areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which amassed rainwater. To offer water to Pincian Hill in the early sixteenth century, they implemented the new approach of redirecting the flow from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct’s underground network. Pozzi, or manholes, were engineered at regular intervals along the aqueduct’s channel. The manholes made it easier to clean the channel, but it was also achievable to use buckets to pull water from the aqueduct, as we witnessed with Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi when he possessed the property from 1543 to 1552, the year he died. It appears that, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t enough to meet his needs. That is when he made the decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran below his property.

Back Story of Outdoor Water Fountains Pope Nicholas V, himself a learned man, ruled the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455 during which time he commissioned many translations of old classical Greek texts into Latin. He undertook the embellishment of Rome to turn it into the worthy capital of the Christian world. At the bidding of the Pope, the Aqua Vergine, a damaged aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into Rome from eight miles away, was renovated starting in 1453. Building a mostra, an imposing celebratory fountain built by ancient Romans to memorialize the arrival point of an aqueduct, was a custom revived by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was commissioned by the Pope to build a wall fountain where we now see the Trevi Fountain.
Adjustments and extensions, included in the restored aqueduct, eventually provided the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.
