Most of the freestanding statues were of youthful, winsome male or female (kore) Greeks and are known as kouros figures. Representing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were created to look stiff and commonly had foot in front; the males were vigorous, robust, and nude. Around 650 BC, life-size forms of the kouroi began to be seen. Throughout the Archaic time, a big time of changes, the Greeks were evolving new forms of government, expressions of art, and a larger awareness of people and cultures outside Greece. During this time and other times of historic tumultuousness, encounters often occurred, most notably wars fought amongst city-states such as the Arcadian wars and the Spartan invasion of Samos.
